Yes, he went South and it was just fine with me….and after reading this you may want your husband’s to do the same…..’cause I have to tell you, it was nice.
Nice because he went with his brother to Florida to take their Nana Marion out for her 95th birthday…..(let’s hear a collective, “Aaaaah, that is nice”)…
And nice for me to have some alone time and to be alone my kids, experiencing a different dynamic than the one that exists when it is the four of us.
How do you handle a change of routine?
I like to think it creates opportunities.
Saturday morning, I rolled over and looked at the clock at 7 a.m. and instead of feeling like a fat, lazy ass because he is usually already up getting ready to run ten miles, I rolled right back over and went back to sleep till 9 (which is like 1 p.m. in teenager time)…but not before looking around the room to see that no one was there and thinking no one will be returning to say, “It stinks in here,” and smiling and farting out loud once or twice. Opportunity.
At 9:30, kids still snoring, I got in a leisurely jog and thought about the big healthy fiber filled cereal Eric has us eat on the weekends after exercise….and arrived home to announce to my now awake children, “Get dressed, we’re having a big greasy breakfast at the diner.” We ate ham and bacon and eggs and pancakes and grilled cheese….”stroke on a plate” and it was awesome. Opportunity.
Post-breakfast, we headed to the kids afternoon sports , then after showers, we went to the mall for a little “shmooing” and “shop-shop,”….not Eric’s favorite activity. Presents for everyone and “thank you kisses” for me….even from Max because when big daddy’s not around, Max forgets to be a tough guy and plants one on my cheek. Then to the food court for a little snack at Taco Bell, our favorite fast food, the thought of which clogs Eric’s arteries (love that crun-chew-eesy, it’s a textural delight) . Opportunity.
At bedtime, Syd asked if she could sleep with me. Of course….there happened to be an opening in my bed that night and she still fits in that space under my arm and snuggles and makes cute noises when she sleeps. She also falls asleep fast….leaving lots of time to enjoy controlling the remote. Multiple opportunities.
Flip to the porn channel….reminded that Syd is sleeping next to me. Missed opportunity.
And Eric had quality time with his brother and Nana. Equal opportunity.
A little change can be good….
Especially when you know your cutie patootie husband will be returning to the nest cause of an opportunity you both seized 18 years ago.
