I have a hangover….and it’s only Friday.
Yes, Eric and I got drunk on a “school night.”
We had an excuse. We were celebrating.
Eric had his quarterly checkup with his oncologist and he has officially hit the "three years cancer free" mark and graduated to 6 month checkups. (If you're new to our story catch up with "Relationship Cortisone" posted on June 15th....look in the archived posts)
And we needed a drink. We needed to do something out of the ordinary because, quite simply, there is nothing ordinary about a man and his family and friends experiencing cancer, battling it and beating it. Nothing ordinary....
Checkup day, especially, is not ordinary. It's a day when you forget all the little annoying things of everyday life and make deals with whatever higher being you believe in, the day you hold your breath, the day you look at the role cancer has played in your life.
So we went for drinks.....
To toast where we are today
To wash away the sorrow of where we were three years ago
To relieve the TMJ which starts a week before the appointment
To toast the people who have been a part of our journey
To express thanks for the love in our lives
To discuss our dreams for our future......
From drinks, we went straight to a Vuv's house, where she had called an impromptu late "school night" gathering for another Vuv child's birthday. There our children and all the other Vuvs and kids were having cake and were watching the premiere of a video created by Sheri of our Vuv vacation, entitled, "Costa-Vuv-Rica"
This showing of love and support was not ordinary either. Rallying around the birthday boy and watching a highlight film of our time together was, there, right before mine and Eric's eyes, evidence of all that is good in life, evidence of what is really important in life and of the promising future that lies ahead for all of us....and there ain't nothing ordinary about any of that.
Life is short, celebrate the victories, let go your anger, open your heart.
The hell with the Dow, live in the now.
